JEEVANRAKSHA – Suicide Prevention Half Day Workshop
A half-day workshop titled “JEEVANRAKSHA – Suicide Prevention” was organized on 5 March 2026 at the Seminar Hall of the Arabic Department, MSM College Kayamkulam. The programme was mainly organized by the Department of Economics in association with the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Alappuzha and THQH Kayamkulam. The programme was also conducted in collaboration with the Departments of History and Politics and the Women’s Club of MSM College.
The workshop aimed to create awareness among students about mental health, emotional well-being, and the importance of suicide prevention. Around 97 students from various departments actively participated in the programme.
The programme began with a formal inaugural session. Dr. A. Muhammad Thaha, Principal of MSM College Kayamkulam, delivered the presidential address, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness among youth and the role of educational institutions in supporting students during emotional difficulties.
The event was honoured by the presence of distinguished guests. Dr. Shaji, Superintendent of THQH Kayamkulam, Dr. Zameer K. H., Vice Principal, Dr. Jyothi G., Council Secretary and Head of the Department of Physics, and Smt. Sajith B., Head of the Department of English and Convenor of the Women’s Club, offered felicitations and appreciated the initiative taken by the Department of Economics and the collaborating departments.
The workshop featured two resource persons who led the main sessions. Dr. Shameena Abdulla, Psychiatrist, Kerala Health Service, delivered an informative talk on mental health, causes of stress and depression among students, warning signs of suicidal behaviour, and methods for prevention and early intervention. The session provided valuable insights into understanding emotional struggles and seeking professional help when needed.
An interactive session was conducted by Mr. Arun Sankar A., DMHP and Allied Services, which encouraged students to openly discuss their concerns, share experiences, and ask questions related to mental health challenges faced by young people today. The session was highly engaging and helped students understand practical coping strategies and the importance of peer support.
The programme was organized under the Economics Association of the Department of Economics. The organizing committee included Assistant Professor Nizia Ameer and Deepthi Gopinath from the Department of Economics, Advaita from the Department of Political Science, and Bindhu P. S. from the Department of History.
The programme coordinators were Swathy A., S6 Economics (Secretary, Economics Association) and Muhammed Ashkar, S4 Economics (Coordinator, Economics Association), who played an active role in coordinating the event and ensuring its smooth conduct.
The programme was effectively compared by Sini Mol of the S4 Politics Department. At the end of the session, Assistant Professor Nizia Ameer of the Department of Economics delivered a feedback address, highlighting the relevance of such awareness programmes and encouraging students to support one another and prioritize mental well-being.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Rajalekshmi, Guest Faculty of the Department of History, expressing gratitude to the resource persons, dignitaries, organizing team, and students for their active participation.
The workshop concluded successfully, leaving a strong impact on the participants. The sessions were highly informative, interactive, and meaningful, helping students gain a deeper understanding of mental health issues and the importance of suicide prevention.
Overall, “JEEVANRAKSHA – Suicide Prevention Workshop” was a very effective and valuable programme, contributing to awareness and promoting a supportive and caring campus environment.
Economic Forum Inauguration – MoU Signing and Prize Distribution
The Department of Economics, Milad-E-Sherief Memorial College, Kayamkulam, successfully organized the Economic Forum 2025–26 on 13 January 2026 at the Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall.
The programme commenced with a prayer followed by a welcome address by Mr. Sathish Soman, Head, Department of Economics. The session was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) A. Muhammed Thaha, Principal, who emphasized the importance of academic initiatives in nurturing analytical and critical thinking skills among students. The forum was inaugurated by Dr. Manoj T. R., Member, Syndicate, University of Kerala.
In his Inaugural Address, Dr. Manoj T. R. delivered an insightful talk on the fundamentals of Economics, with special reference to Socialism, Capitalism, and Mixed Economy, explaining their relevance and application in the contemporary socio-economic context.
The Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Sudheesh P. N., Assistant Professor of Economics, Christ Academy Institute of Law, Bengaluru, who focused on the issue of poverty in India and Kerala, analyzing its causes, implications, and policy perspectives. His address was informative and thought-provoking, followed by an engaging interaction session with students.
During the interaction session, Arya Vijayan, Semester IV student of Political Science, was awarded a gift prize by Dr. Sudheesh P. N. for correctly answering the questions raised during the discussion.
A major highlight of the programme was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Christ Academy Institute of Law, Bengaluru (Christ College) and Milad-E-Sherief Memorial College, Kayamkulam. The MoU aims to promote academic collaboration through joint seminars, faculty exchange, research activities, and student enrichment programmes.
The programme also featured a Prize Distribution Ceremony recognizing academic excellence and co-curricular achievements. Cash prizes were awarded to winners of the Essay Writing Competition and the Poster Making Competition, with three cash prizes distributed for the poster making competition. In total, 10 awards were presented under literary and art competitions.
In addition, certificates and medals were awarded to meritorious students of Economics (Major, Minor, and MDC) who secured the highest Grade Point in Economics under the FYUGP during Semester I, II, and III examinations. Special recognition was accorded to Ms. Swathy, III Year B.A. Economics, who secured the highest Grade Point in Mathematical Methods for Economics in the Fourth Semester Examinations held in July 2025.
Altogether, 28 students were awarded for academic proficiency, acknowledging their outstanding academic performance.
The programme was felicitated by Dr. Zameer K. H. (Vice Principal), Dr. Anil Kumar K. M. (IQAC Coordinator), Dr. Swapna K. Cherian (Head, Department of Commerce), Dr. Rekha Nair R. (Head, Department of Politics), and Mr. Abijith S. (Chairman, College Union).

Report on BSE’s Investor Awareness Program
The Department of Commerce, in collaboration with the Department of Economics and the Women’s Club of MSM College, organized the BSE’s Investor Awareness Program to educate students on the importance of informed investing and financial literacy. The event was held at the commerce department class room and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Swapna K Cherian, Head of the Department of Commerce. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of financial awareness among students and the role of such initiatives in shaping responsible investors.
The session was formally inaugurated with the presidential address by Dr. A Muhammad Thaha, Principal of MSM College. The resource person for the session was Mr. Sumith C S, a seasoned expert in capital markets and investor education. He delivered an insightful presentation on the basics of stock markets, the importance of saving and investing early, risk management, and how to make informed investment decisions. The session was highly interactive, with students actively engaging in discussions and clarifying their doubts.
The program concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Nizia Ameer, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the resource person, college management, organizing team, and all participants for making the event a grand success.The Investor Awareness Program proved to be an enriching experience, equipping students with valuable knowledge and encouraging them to take a keen interest in managing their finances wisely.

Educational reform in vanjeeyodu kani settlement The department of economics believes in supporting socio economic upliftment of under privileged and backward classes especially tribals, hence to the effect the department has decided to conduct a socio economic survey on the tribals of vanjeeyodu kani settlement ,these tribals belongs to ward 5 of chithara panchayat coming under Kottarakara taluk in Kollam district. - The department of Economics in conjuction with Govt Children’s Home Kollam arranged an interaction between our students and inmates of the home .The department carried out an ice break session with these students and distributed note books and stationary to the pupils at the Juvenile home and continues its extended support.
